An Chonair Bar Session

An Chonair Bar in Dingle has long been a venue for traditional Irish music. A new session has been added every Monday at 9 pm. The location is Spa Road on the way out of town towards Conor Pass.

The leading musician is piper Con Durham and he is usually joined by various musician friends. I attended the session last Monday and I must say it was fabulous. The atmosphere was warm and cosy with an open fire and the music was great.

We had Con on the pipes, two fiddles, guitar, banjo, penny whistle, harmonica and mandolin.

The customers were very engaged and there were several bursts of spontaneous dancing to the lively music.

I'm involved with the Rhythm bones Society here in the states and have been over to compete in the All Ireland Bone Playing Championship held in Abbeyfeale in county Limerick. You can reach me at bones@crystal-mtn.com . Looking forward to it,

Dear Sir, I have just come across your blog which I found fascinating reading specifically as I am going on holiday and staying for 4 days in Dingle town in Sept this year, to undertake some further investigation ref the loss of the Aud (a bit obsessed with of 1916 I’m afraid) and of course to hear some Trad Sessions before hitting Dublin.
Question: Are open sessions really open sessions? And how do I get in on one as I am quite shy and also very conscious of the fact that I am English. I would love to sing The Boys of Barr Na Sraide in a session or maybe even one of my own songs........... And am I good enough? See my version www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXKUanw6mCw – Your advice would be most welcome – Great Blog – and thanks
Kind Regards

Dear Ben:

Thank you for your interest in my blog. Regarding your question, it is not difficult to find your way with the sessions here. Some sessions are open and welcome visitors, others are less so and some are more like performances. It is not really a matter of how good you are, you just have to ask. Otherwise, let me know when you come here and I will set you straight.

I would be interested to hear what you have to say about the Aud. An odd connection is that my daughter-in-law, who lives here, is from Lubeck, the place that the Aud last sailed from.

Regards,
Finbarr
